How to Look After Your Delicate Eye Area

The Importance of Proper Eye Care

Caring for the skin around your eyes is an important part of any skin care routine. The skin around the eye area is very delicate, thin and sensitive. It is different from the skin anywhere else on the face or body. The skin around the eyes loses elasticity faster and is more sensitive to environmental stresses such as the sun and pollution. It is the first to show signs of age and also the first to show signs of exhaustion. The skin around the eyes is a telltale sign of the truth of whats going on with your skin. Our under eye area is much more susceptible to issues and problems due to its thin nature. Sleep deprivation, fighting a cold and dehydration can all cause dark circles and puffiness to occur under the eyes. The blood vessels around the eyes that supply oxygen and nutrients are smaller. If you are exhausted or sick, the thinnest parts of skin on the body are going to show this first.  In order to keep yourself and your under eye area healthy it is good practice to stay hydrated, get enough sleep and eat nourishing foods for your skin.

Having a good eye care regimen is also vital. Good eye care need not be complicated. Ingredients that are potential irritants to the skin around the eyes such as acids, heavy fragrances and essential oils can cause damage to the skin around the eyes.

Eye makeup should be removed gently with a cotton pad and cleansing milk or micellar water.

After cleansing, application of eye care products should be done using a dabbing motion with ring finger working outwards. The ring finger is ideal as it ensures application is nice and gentle.

Eye care comes in serums, gels or creams. Each has their own unique advantage. Serums are more potent and their ingredients absorb quickly, however some people may feel that they eye area still feels as though it ‘needs something’. This is a false indication as the serum has been absorbed with little to no product sitting on the outer layer of the skin.

Eye gels are a great products due to their light texture and moisturizing capabilities. Eye gels active ingredients absorb quickly and hydrate the eye area providing much needed protection.

Eye serums work by promoting the rapid absorption of key ingredients.

A great ingredient in eye products is Persian Silk Tree Extract. A natural antioixdant with anti-inflammatory properties, Persian Silk Tree extract  protects the skin cells and counteract the sagging effect of droopy eyelids.

The Persian Silk Tree Extract’s anti-glycation effect helps tighten and protect the delicate skin around the eye. Glycation happens when sugar bonds to the proteins (collagen) in skin and starts to degrade that protein. The skin ages faster and a ‘crisscross’ pattern of wrinkles appear. Persian Silk Tree Extract protects the skin  from the degrading effects of glycation, lifting the lids and restoring a more youthful appearance.

Some other star ingredients in eye care are:-

  1. Multi Peptides:- peptides help stimulate collagen production around the eye area. This helps strengthen the skin’s elasticity which makes the skin smoother and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and expression lines.
  2. Seaweed:- the numerous benefits of seaweed can be found here. To sum up, seaweed is an antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals and oxidative stress. Seaweed helps detoxify skin and regulate sebum production. Its deeply nourishing and soothing as well.
  3. Rice Bran:-  Vital source of vitamins A,B2, B12, & E. A potent antioxidant and rich in naturally moisturizing proteins.
  4. Hyaluronic Acid:- Promotes cell growth. Fantastic source of hydration and improvement of the skin’s barrier.
