The Incredible Benefits of Zinc

Skin Expert Eva Karpati talks about Zinc and Skincare.

How Zinc helps you get beautiful skin!

Zinc isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about getting beautiful skin, but it is an essential ingredient I depend on when treating the skin. Zinc is a “trace mineral”- you need only a very small amount each day.  Zinc is found in every single cell in the body and in more than 100 different enzymes we need to function. Skin especially depends on Zinc. The outer layer of skin contains up to six times more Zinc than is found in the lower layers. I can often tell when a client is lacking in zinc as there are indications that are apparent such as acne and clogged pores due to an overproduction of oil.   Zinc is found in meat, chicken eggs, dairy, seafood such as oysters and crabs, chickpeas, lentils, seeds and nuts.

My diet is predominately plant based so I take a zinc supplement to maintain a healthy balance.

I also include zinc in some of the products in my Karpati Natural Skin Care range for the incredible benefits it has.

The greatest benefit that can be found in Zinc is its anti-oxidant properties. Oxidative stress is the process by which free radicals are produced, often as a result of external environmental factors such as pollution, sunlight and smoking. Free radicals interact with other molecules within cells  and can cause damage to the cells – increasing the signs of ageing and weakening the skin structure. Zinc aids in the production of metallothioneine which helps protect cells against heavy metals and oxidative stress. It reduces free radicals and protects skin’s lipids and fibroblasts – essential to collagen formation. By supporting collagen formation zinc helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of ageing.

Another benefit is UV protection. Zinc is one of the safest ingredients for protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. A good SPF will contain Zinc Oxide. This is the key UV filter found in a good sunscreen. Sun damage is caused by UV rays penetrating the skin and damaging the tissue, speeding up the aging process and drying the skin out. These rays also increase the risk of skin cancer. Zinc filters out UV rays, keeping them from penetrating the skin and causing cell damage.

Finally, zinc helps heal and repair skin. This is because it promotes the production of collagen fibers and elastin which supports the structure of the skin. Zinc also assists with cell production and the function of cell membranes, regulating cell turnover, this means it can help reduce the amount of oil, preventing pores from clogging and protecting the skin against infection and inflammation, making it the perfect ingredient for acne prone skin types.

It is for these benefits that ZINC is our Skincare Ingredient of The Month !
