Open Pores

Pores are small openings in your skin. Large pores are noticeable to the naked eye. Large pore size is common in both oily and combination skin because of excess sebum (oil) production from sebaceous glands. These glands are located beneath the skin’s surface. Open pores can increase acne as pollution, dead skin cells, make-up, and dirt can enter the open pores, which continuously produce sebum and oil. Blackheads, a common skin complaint, form into plugs at the opening of pores. Thorough and regular deep pore cleansing and extractions can help minimize the appearance of large pores. Maintaining a healthy sebum balance is essential.

Pore size also can increase with age. As skin loses its elasticity, pores appear larger. Sun damage also affects the appearance of pores by thickening skin and causing cells to collect around the edges of pores – stretching them out.
